Thought leadership on the world stage
Our annual International Study Tour brings together the big thinkers, sector innovators and industry leaders to learn about overseas seniors’ communities
We are constantly looking for ways to innovate and improve seniors’ built-form products and services. Likewise, we are always keen to share new learnings, knowledge and innovations in our industry.
Since 2014, we have hosted our annual International Study Tour. On our experience-rich tour, we are joined by sector leaders to visit the world’s-best retirement living, land lease, assisted living and aged care facilities. We also share industry innovations with leading developers and operators via two-day conferences in major cities at the start of each tour.Register to find out more about our next IST Register to find out more about our next IST
We examine the built form, financial models and service and operations culture in communities of varying size and scale to bring that innovation into our thinking – thinking we action into meaningful intelligence for our Australian clients. These insights don’t come from retirement communities alone. We visit mixed-use developments, communities co-located with universities and childcare and architectural projects that are breaking new ground design and material choices. Back-of-house tours of five star hotels help us understand the service culture that today’s senior expects.
To complete the IST experience, we stay in five star hotels and enjoy the best of local cuisine at celebrated restaurants in each city. There is an exceptional, optional, extra-curricular program too, where you can immerse yourself in local culture, theatre, entertainment, sport or relaxation.
Sharing such experiences and insights with your industry peers, makes our IST a must for all those in the seniors’ industry at the C-suite level.
The places we have been on IST
Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco
For our first ever IST, 24 delegates from Australia and New Zealand travelled to eighteen communities across Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. A key focus of the tour was to develop insights into high-end hospitality and experiential businesses. Back-of-house hotel tours (including the London in West Hollywood and the Grand Del Mar in San Diego) were organised to understand their approaches to large scale customer service delivery.
New York City, Washington, Orlando, Dallas
Starting in New York, we packed our dynamic tour into 10 days. For IST 15 we attended over 20 presentations and tours, met some of the world’s best operators, went ‘backstage’ at leading retirement communities and prestige hotels, and got the low down on new technology. Delegates arrived home armed with a wealth of newfound knowledge and inspirational ideas – ready to nurture much needed growth in the Australian seniors’ industry.
Britain, Rotterdam, Amsterdam
Our IST 16 delegates discovered the latest innovations in UK seniors’ living, while experiencing the exceptional service delivery of an award-winning suite of luxury hotels. Kicking off the tour was a two-day leadership conference, along with 14 vertical and broadacre tours, masterclasses with the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, insights on assisted living, in-home and residential aged care and a trip to The Netherlands to learn more about their innovative work on dementia care.
Copenhagen, Malmo, Hamburg, Berlin
Our tour took delegates through five of the best cities in Denmark, Sweden and Germany. We discovered why Europe’s wealthiest families are changing retirement living for the better by building their own environment. We toured multi-generational housing developments, luxury seniors’ apartments, ‘living’ neighbourhoods, a converted convent, an innovative end-of-life facility and a Buddhist centre, while hearing from leading seniors’ architects, urban developers and housing companies.
Toronto, Quebec City, Montreal, Vancouver
On our most ambitious and exciting tour to date, we learned about diverse communities; from brand new vertical developments to ethnic and religion specific villages, to an exciting mixed-use project. Our delegates gained first-hand knowledge of the latest industry developments from Canada’s finest, along with a leadership conference in Toronto, where insights from the Canadian industry’s most impressive minds were shared.
Chicago, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Palm Springs (postponed to 2022)
For IST 20, the plan was to travel to the USA, however it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our program included presentations from experts on senior housing, longevity, mixed use projects, research, customer experience, health and wellbeing and dementia care, along with valuations, financing and sales. Tours for luxury resort communities, boutique independent living projects, broadacre and vertical communities and world class developments were also planned.
